Advanced Equine Dentistry

ECLAP strives to keep the knowledge base, skill level, and equipment up to date in order to provide your horse with the best care ever. In keeping with that commitment, Dr. Chandler recently attended two advanced equine dental seminars. A comprehensive dental exam is paramount to correcting dental problems such as biting issues, behavioral problems, weight loss, chronic colic, and oral pain. We have added new, state of the art equipment to our arsenal of tools in order to do the best possible job of identifying and correcting dental abnormalities.

In addition to having the proper tools, the proper environment and level of safe restraint are important for a good outcome. ECLAP’s indoor stocks are the perfect environment to facilitate an advanced examination and correction. An annual thorough dental exam can have a huge “return on investment” in terms of your horse’s overall health and comfort-so bring in your mount and let us give those pearly whites a tune up. Call the clinic to schedule an appointment for your equine family members.

Pre-Purchase Exams:

All the veterinarians at ECLAP perform “Pre-Purchase Exams.” This thorough examination is highly recommended to all prospective horse owners for horses intended to be used for any and all purposes. The cost for a “Pre-Purchase Exam” consists of a physical and soundness evaluation. The veterinarian will draw blood to keep on hand for 6 months in the event that drug testing is requested. The typical exam can take anywhere from 2-3 hours depending on how many optional services are performed. The exam area needs be a dry, flat, hard surface (preferably not a soft riding ring). Keep in mind that horses should not have been trimmed or shod for 2 weeks prior to the exam, and the horse should not be extensively overdue. After completion of the exam, the veterinarian will give you a complete summary of his/her findings.
The physical evaluation includes examination of the following:
  • Respiratory System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Gastrointestinal System
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Neurological System
  • External Genitalia System
  • Opthalmic Exam

The Soundness evaluation includes an analysis during motion; the following examinations apply:
  • Hoof tester exam
  • Flexor Tendons
  • Spavin Flexion Test
  • Musculature
  • Joint Effusion
  • Suspensory Ligament
  • Stifle Joint
  • Integument
  • Lameness
  • Inflammation
  • Hoof Conformation
  • General Conformation
Optional Services provided for an additional charge:
  • Radiographs (x-rays)
  • Digital Ultrasound

Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave? Extracorporeal shockwaves are high-pressure, low frequency sound waves, generated by a device outside the body and applied to the affected tissue in a site-specific manner. This type of therapy was originally used to treat human beings with kidney stones, by breaking up the stones without the need for invasive surgery. More recently, shockwaves have been used to treat a range of orthopedic conditions in both human beings and animals. When the shockwaves meet the tissue interfaces of different densities, the energy contained in the shockwaves is released and interacts with the tissue. The shockwaves appear to relieve pain and accelerate healing within the injured tissue, although the mechanism for these effects is unclear.

How is Shockwave treatment performed? First, a veterinarian must determine the exact source of the pain with a thorough lameness exam and possibly using radiographs or diagnostic ultrasound. Sedation is required for the application of the shockwaves, which takes no more than 20 minutes per site. Three treatments are recommended with a 7-14 day interval between each treatment.

What injuries will benefit from Shockwave Therapy? Since shockwave therapy uses the passage of sound waves through tissue, it is believed that any injury clearly identifiable on an ultrasound scan will potentially respond well to shockwave therapy. Conditions that may benefit from ESWT include, but are not limited to:

- Insertional desmopathies (Suspensory & Collateral ligament injuries)
- Tendonpathies (with and without calcification)
- Stress fractures
- Metacarpal joint disease
- Sesamoiditis & Sesamoid fractures
- Splint & coffin bone fractures
- Navicular disease
- Bone exotosis
- Degenerative joint disease (e.g. ring bone, spavin)
- Sore back problems

How much does Shockwave cost? $250 per treatment plus sedation and a call fee

Digital Radiograph Machine

As of summer 2004, ECLAP offers sophisticated radiograph (X-Ray) capabilities with our Digital Radiograph machine. This new piece of equipment allows us to acquire an image on the computer screen within 4 seconds of exposure. The image quality is exceptional and can be enhanced and modulated to detect soft tissue and bone abnormalities.  The advantages of this system are significant. There is no more waiting to develop films, and the quality of the images is superb. We archive your exam in the computer for instant access to previous digital radiographs, and we can burn a CD containing the images for you to keep. One of the many benefits of this new machine for the client, is that you can see instantly what the problem is as the veterinarian explains the images. This system also gives us the capability to quickly and efficiently get a specialists opinion.

Digital Ultrasound Machine

As of the fall 2003, ECLAP now offers digital diagnostic services with our computerized Digital Ultrasound machine. This machine has fantastic imaging capabilities, allowing us to examine tendons, eyes, hearts, kidneys, livers, lungs, and much more. The information can be burned onto a CD for you to keep, or if needed, be sent to a specialist for review. The quality of these images is superb, taking our veterinary capabilities to another level of diagnostics.

Health Maintenance Program:

ECLAP has a yearly program that condenses the amount of doctor visits for annual procedures. Every year a horse should receive vaccinations, teeth floating, deworming and sheath cleaning. The HMP is a program that will provide you with all of these services.

A one-time fee of $375.00 is paid on the first visit and includes: 1) twice yearly ranch calls and physical exams, 2) twice yearly vaccinations (one 5-way, one Flu Rhino, and twice Yearly West Nile Virus Vaccinations), 3) six dewormers, 4) teeth examined and floated with sedation, and 5) sheath cleaned and examined. The price does stay the same if the horse is a mare and does not need a sheath cleaning. The price does go down if you have more than one horse on the program. For two or more horses, it is $340.00 per horse. Strangles vaccinations are not included in the program and are an additional fee.

The average cost of services for the year is:

SERVICE COST
Call Fee x 2 $150.00

Sheath w/sedation $58.00

Worming Program

ECLAP is offering a new worming program. Clients can now pay a one-time annual fee per horse which will provide you with a year’s supply of dewormer shipped directly to your door. This new annual deworming program eliminates the hassle of having to keep track of your horse’s scheduled deworming dates because ECLAP will automatically send you the products on time, every other month for one full year. This service will also save you the time and money of making additional veterinary appointments in order to deworm your horses. Most importantly, participating in this program will provide preventative maintenance for your horses, increasing their health status and protection against various parasites. This program will also benefit ECLAP by allowing us to provide even more quality service and time towards other medical issues during our veterinary visits with you.

The new deworming program is only $100 per horse (or $90 per horse for two or more horses) for the entire year. Shipping and handling is included in the cost. STAT Coggins can be performed most days of the week.

Pot Bellied Pig

ECLAP offers routine services for Pot Bellied Pigs to include the following:

  • Ear Cleaning
  • Hoof Trimming
  • Check Eyes
  • De-Worm
  • Trim/File Tusks

We have some requirements that are always followed as a safety measure when handling pigs:

  • It is required that someone is present to help restrain the pig
  • The pig needs to be confined in a very small area
  • The pig cannot have food or water after midnight the night before
  • As a safety measure, the Pig is always sedated
  • There is a high risk with sedation because there are no sedatives made specifically for pigs. The doctors use a canine sedative.
  • The owner must be able to supervise the pig after sedation in a safe, quiet environment, free of anything sharp/hard. Sometimes it can take all day for the pig to fully recover.
  • The pig should not eat until fully awake following sedation.
